How to Migrate a WordPress Site to a New Domain

If you are migrating the site and keeping the same domain name all you have to do is back up the database, and copy all the wordpress files over to the new server.  If you are changning domain names before you do anything you have to go into the wordpress settings and change the URL so that it updates all the links in the site.

Steps:

  1. Log into the wordpress admin dashboard, click on settings, and update both the “wordpress URL” and the “site URL” with the new domain name. Ex: www.clintlyon.com
  2. Back up the database either using PHPmyadmin or from a command line type “mysqldump -u -p wordpress > backup.sql”      Where wordpress is the name of the database and backup.sql is the name of the output file.
  3. On the new hosting server you need to execute the backup.sql file on the database server.  You will need to know the name of the previous database and either create a new database with the same name, or go into the wp-config.php file and change the database reference with the new database name.  You can execute the backup.sql file with either phpmyadmin or a command line.
  4. Create a new user for the database you just created with the same username and password that’s in the wp-config.php file.
  5. Copy over all the wordpress files to the new home directory on the new server, once that is done the site should be up and running.
  6. Download Blue velvet URL Updater and update all image URL’s in the database.

Found a Great New Site for Getting CTEC Approved Tax CPE

I wanted to write about this great new site I found to get my online tax CPE. The website is very easy and straight forward to use and prices are very reasonable. Continuing education is not my favorite thing to do and I especially don’t want to have to drive far away, spend money on a hotel, and be required to sit in a class all day just to fulfill my yearly CPE requirements. Online courses in my opinion are the way to go, and Tax Courses Online is a a great site to use for it.

We are here, and we are alive! (better late than never)

While landing into Phuket we were sitting next to a Thai lady snapping so many pictures out of the airplane. Clint was on the aisle seat and desperately trying to see out the window. But every time he would start to get a glance, back went the camera and the hundreds of pictures being taken. So sadly, he only got to see a pink camera while landing into Phuket. Next we found a taxi driver to take us to the hostel in Patong. We bargained a price and within two minutes of driving he was trying to raise his price. Needless to say we made it to the hostel alive, why paint lines on roads just to ignore them, paying our original price and checked in. We found Andrea, Kyle, and Phil and headed to the beach, Clint got his first mai-tai in Thailand! The water feels like a warm bath and the surf was good enough to body board. Clint almost got talked into buying a watch, but at the last moment he discovered the watch didn’t work, that is unless you hit it against your hand! Clint made friends with some locals and was pulled into a soccer game and lets just say running in the sand in tiring! The rain really started around then and we headed back to the hostel to shower off the thick layer of salt from the ocean. Now we have been awake for ohh 2 days with about 5 hours of sleep but feeling a little peppy. We got dinner and headed to Bangla road. After a few beers I thought I was going to die of exhaustion so Clint took me back and we slept. Andrea, Kyle, and Phil stayed out so we will see if Phil got his way and saw a ping pong show! This morning we are off to see rescued gibbons and explore the beaches below Patong. We have gotten 9 hours of sleep so we will see what this night beholds. . . . . .
